Shetland's a great place for an active family holiday. Our 15 inhabited islands are amazingly busy - there's always something interesting going on and the long days of summer are the peak time for outdoor activities. We promise: you'll never run out of things to do.

Walking

Shetland roads are wide open to the touring cyclist: smooth surfaces, light traffic, friendly folk and unforgettable vistas...

Golf

Trout Fishing

Anglers just can't believe Shetland when they find it first. If you're feeling energetic, you can fish a dozen lochs a day at astonishingly low fees. With over 400 to choose from, however, you may spend quite a lot of time making your mind up. Learn more about trout fishing in Shetland.

Sea Angling

Shetland is one of Europe's richest fishing grounds and that's reflected in the catches of mackerel, coley, ling and other ground fish landed at our traditional 'Eela' competitions. Sailing

Dinghy sailing is hugely popular in Shetland, where traditional sailing and rowing regattas are a big part of summer social life. Visiting crew are always welcome in weekly races at clubs around the islands - and the wind surfing is out of this world.

Surfing

There's some wonderful surfing on the three beaches right next to Sumburgh Airport at the southern tip of the islands. Local surfers can show you many other good spots for Britain's most northerly 'barrels'.

Diving

We have to admit the water in Shetland is a little too bracing for some tastes, but don a wetsuit against the chill and you'll discover some of the best snorkelling and sub-aqua territory on Britain. Photography

It's just as well they invented digital cameras. It could bankrupt you, using film to photograph all this stunning scenery and wondrous wildlife. The light is very special and there's lots of it.
