Temporary Exhibition: St Magnus Sails

Banners by Orcadian artists
Orkney's dramatic 'Sails in St Magnus' exhibition comes to the Shetland Museum and Archive to coincide with this year's Johnsmas Foy and its Viking theme.

Sails in St Magnus" was designed as a visual arts installation for the 1993 St Magnus Festival in Orkney. The project, specifically designed to be hung in the arches of the central nave of St Magnus Cathedral, was based on the paradox that the Vikings used the Cathedral as a sail loft to dry and store the sails of their longships.

The installation, comprising of 14 free hanging sails, was painted and screen printed to produce images that were inspired by a series of one line poems, specially written for the project by George MacKay Brown.

The theme of the exhibition is the pilgrimage from Orkney to Jerusalem in 1151 by Earl Rognvald the second of Orkney. Earl Rognvald dedicated this voyage to his uncle, St Magnus the Martyr from whom the Cathedral takes its name. The original account of the voyage appeared in the Orkneyinga Saga, being the history of the Norse Earls who ruled the islands in the middle ages. George Mackay Brown was enthusiastic about the project as the Norse Sagas were a source of inspiration within his own poems and stories.

The visual arts team were made up of Erlend Brown, Dave Jackson, Andrew Parkinson and Mary Scott. Each of the artists was responsible for the design and production of three of the sails, with the final two sails being a collaborative effort, shared out between the team. The Exhibition has toured extensively at home and abroad and after fifteen years shows no sign of declining in popularity.

Two of the 'Sails' artists - Dave Jackson and Erlend Brown - will be in Shetland to coincide with the opening of the exhibition and may deliver a series of talks on its content while in the islands. Further information on, and details of, these will appear on the Shetland Museum and Archive website and in the local press.

The exhibition is promoted on behalf of the Johnsmas Foy by Shetland Museum and Archives.

Note: Access to this exhibition may be restricted at certain times due to other events taking place in the venue auditorium.

Sumburgh Head is home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins. It is one of the most accessible seabird colonies in Britain, with cliffs teeming with guillemots, fulmars and other seabirds. RSPB staff and volunteers will help show you the birds and learn about their lives. There will be games and activities. As well as the drama of the seabirds, Sumburgh Head has played an important part in protecting human life, most obviously through the Stevenson's Lighthouse. However, there is an important but little known World War 2 story, which will be shared with you by the Shetland Amenity Trust Assistant Archaeologist at 12pm and 3pm. Not to be missed!

  RSPB Event: Puffin Evening

Join RSPB staff to learn more about the nations favourite seabird. Evenings can often be a better time to watch puffins, known locally as "Tammy Nories." Puffins will be the main focus of the evening, but we will also take a look at their neighbours at this busy seabird colony. Meet at the car park, before walking up to the lighthouse. Easy terrain, though steep in places. Less able-bodied people may park within the lighthouse complex.

Blue Sky Holidays - Shetlands Natural and Built Landscapes

These Holidays will be focused on the natural and built landscapes of Shetland, giving participants the opportunity to sketch and paint our rugged coastlines, traditional croft houses and the historic lanes of Lerwick.

Drawing locations will be chosen on a weather dependant basis but will always ensure a mix of venue and interest. Programme and tuition will be delivered by experienced arts professionals, with participants encouraged to produce working sketches and at least one finished piece as a memento of their holiday. Media used will include: charcoal, inks, pencil and watercolour - full demonstrations and examples can be given and advice will be on hand for compositional and technical struggles, however, emphasis will always be on freedom of expression.

Ł175 per person – includes accommodation, home cooked meals, transport between drawing locations and all art materials.
